Divorce mediation may not be the first approach couples consider when they decide to end their journey together, but they probably should.

Some start out "pro se" (representing themselves) with the best of intentions and while it's true that many are successfully divorced this way, it's more the exception than the rule. Others cut right to the chase and each side hires an attorney - or multiple attorneys if children are involved, resulting in a very expensive litigation, sometimes exceeding tens of thousands of dollars, and often taking many years to complete.

Divorce mediation can be considered the median between the two extremes. It involves facilitated meetings between the parties designed to reach a fair and equitable agreement on the issues at hand. Once the parties have addressed the respective points, a written Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) is provided by the mediator. This is a detailed report outlining the division of marital assets which is then filed with the court. Divorce mediation guides couples to consider not only current needs, but long term needs as well, reducing the couple’s potential to return for modifications.

Divorce mediation is completely voluntary, providing an opportunity for both sides to be heard. The mediator ensures that the meeting environment is respectful, confidential and private.

Your divorce process and decisions belong to you. You are the only ones that will have to live with the decisions years from now – not the attorneys and not the judge.

Middlesex Wellness & Mediation offers a full range of divorce mediation services including post-judgment, pre-nuptial and marital agreements.
